Inga Moore, born in Sussex, England, in 1945, is a distinguished author and illustrator of children’s books. At the age of eight, she emigrated with her family to Australia, where she developed a deep appreciation for British literature and the English countryside. An imaginative child, Moore was passionate about drawing, often illustrating her own stories and schoolwork. Despite this early interest, she did not attend art school, a decision she later regretted.

After holding various jobs, including making maps for a groundwater company, Moore was inspired by Raymond Briggs’s “Father Christmas” to pursue a career in illustration. She returned to England in the early 1980s, settling in Hampstead, London, before eventually moving to rural Gloucestershire. The countryside there provided inspiration for her acclaimed illustrations of Kenneth Grahame’s “The Wind in the Willows,” published in 1996, which has sold over a million copies worldwide.

Moore’s distinctive style, characterized by detailed and gentle images, often employs a multimedia approach using pencil, ink, watercolor, crayon, pastel, and oil paint. Her notable works include “Six-Dinner Sid,” which won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in the under-five category, and illustrated editions of classics such as “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett and “The Canterville Ghost” by Oscar Wilde.

As of 2010, Moore was residing in Gloucestershire, continuing her work as an illustrator. Her contributions to children’s literature have been widely recognized, and her books remain popular among readers for their enchanting storytelling and evocative illustrations.
