Pearl Binder [1904-1990] was born in Salford, the daughter of a Jewish immigrant. She settled in the East of London in her twenties and was inspired to record the characters and the culture she found there. Here, she is writing at a time when the Soviet Union was an ally in the war against Germany and the tone of the story is upbeat about the achievements of the USSR in raising its people out of poverty.
