Pritchard & Burton

Pritchard & Burton was a London tobacco manufacturer active in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, remembered today for its distinctive, often scarce, cigarette card issues. The firm is particularly noted for sets such as the Flags & Soldiers Series and the South African Series, produced around the time of the Boer War.

Their cards are characteristic of early cigarette advertising: bold, descriptive, and strongly tied to contemporary imperial, military, and patriotic themes. Many backs carry memorable brand slogans, including “Heart’s Delight Cigarettes — The Best Penny Packet”.

For collectors, Pritchard & Burton cards are desirable not only for their age and visual charm, but also because they appear less frequently on the market than issues from larger manufacturers such as Wills, Players, or Churchman.
