Hector Copland Macpherson (1888–1956) was a Scottish amateur astronomer and prolific astronomy populariser, best known for his clear, accessible writing that brought astronomy to a wide audience in the early 20th century.

Although ordained as a Church of Scotland minister, Macpherson maintained a lifelong passion for astronomy and made it a major focus of his intellectual work. He became a Fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Macpherson made no major observational discoveries himself but made a significant contribution through his historical writings and educational texts.

Among his most important works are Astronomers of To-Day and Their Work (1905), A Century’s Progress in Astronomy (1906), and Modern Cosmologies (1929). These books surveyed the development of astronomy up to his time and highlighted the work of major astronomers such as William Huggins, George Ellery Hale, and Edwin Hubble. His publications were widely read in the English-speaking world and helped disseminate the latest astronomical developments to the general public.

Macpherson also contributed numerous articles to The Observatory, Nature, and other scientific journals. He served for many years as secretary and later president of the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, where he regularly lectured and promoted scientific outreach.
