Janet & John Books
Janet & John Books
Few reading schemes are as fondly remembered as Janet & John. Published from the late 1940s through the 1960s, these beautifully illustrated books introduced generations of British children to reading through the everyday adventures of a brother and sister. Simple, warm, and gently repetitive in the best possible way, they remain among the most collectible vintage children's books in the UK.
At Honeyburn Books, we stock a carefully curated selection of Janet & John titles — from early Nisbet editions to later printings — all individually described, photographed, and gift-wrapped before dispatch.
About the Janet & John Series
Written by Mabel O'Donnell and illustrated by Jessie Wilkins, the Janet & John series was published by James Nisbet & Co. and widely adopted by British primary schools throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The series was adapted from the American Alice and Jerry books and localised for British readers, giving the stories their distinctive mid-century English charm.
The books follow Janet, John, and their dog Jock through simple domestic and outdoor adventures, with vocabulary carefully graded to build reading confidence at each level. Their warm, pastel illustrations and unhurried pace make them as appealing to adult collectors today as they were to young readers decades ago.

Collecting Janet & John
What Makes These Books Valuable?
Early Nisbet Editions — First and early printings from the late 1940s and 1950s are the most sought after, particularly in good condition with bright covers.
Complete Sets — A full matched set in consistent condition is increasingly rare and highly desirable to collectors.
Condition — As school reading books, heavily used copies are common. Clean, bright copies with minimal writing or stamps command a significant premium.
School Stamps & Inscriptions — Some collectors actively seek copies with school stamps or period inscriptions as historical artefacts; others prefer clean copies. We always note these clearly.
Illustrator Appeal — Jessie Wilkins' warm, pastel illustrations are a key part of the series' charm and collectibility.
Condition Grading
We carefully grade every Janet & John book:
- Fine — As new or nearly new condition
- Very Good — Minor wear, intact and attractive
- Good — Obviously used but complete and sound
- Fair — Reading copy with significant wear
All defects, school stamps, writing, or repairs are clearly noted in our descriptions.
