1940’s A Nannie Speaks(Golden Thoughts Booklet) Hilda Trevelyan-Thomson(Valentine & Sons Ltd)
Very rare little book where a nannie in verse recounts bringing up a little boy who gets killed on active service during the war. Book shows hardly any sign of wear.
Hilda Trevelyan Thomson was an actress and writer, born as Hilda Marie Antoinette Anna Tucker in Hackney, London, in 1877. She achieved notable success in early 20th-century theater, including her work with J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Trevelyan was particularly famous for originating the role of Wendy Darling in the stage production of Peter Pan in 1904 and for playing Maggie in Barrie’s What Every Woman Knows, a role written specifically for her.
Later in life, she also published poetry, including her collection Our Finest Hour and Other Verses, released in 1945. This work appears to reflect on themes of World War II and Britain’s resilience during the conflict. It was published by Wm. Appleyard, but information about the availability or wider recognition of her poetry is limited today. Trevelyan retired from acting in 1939 and spent her final years near Henley-on-Thames, passing away in 1959 at age 82.
