Siné, whose real name was Maurice Sinet, was a French cartoonist, journalist, and satirist. He was born on December 31, 1928, in Paris, France, and passed away on May 5, 2016, in the same city.
Siné began his career in the 1950s as a cartoonist for the French newspaper L'Express, where he gained popularity for his irreverent and provocative cartoons that often tackled taboo subjects such as sex, religion, and politics. He later worked for other publications such as Charlie Hebdo, Hara-Kiri, and Paris Match.
Throughout his career, Siné was known for his sharp wit and biting satire, which often landed him in trouble with the authorities. In 1962, he was fired from L'Express after publishing a cartoon that was deemed anti-Semitic. He then founded his own magazine, Siné Massacre, which was banned by the French government in 1975.
In the 2000s, Siné became a vocal critic of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and was accused of making anti-Semitic comments. This led to his dismissal from Charlie Hebdo in 2008, which sparked a controversy and a debate about freedom of speech.
Despite the controversies surrounding his work, Siné remained a beloved figure in the French satirical scene until his death in 2016. He was a recipient of numerous awards, including the Grand Prix de l'Humour Noir and the Legion of Honour. His legacy continues to inspire cartoonists and satirists around the world.
